How to Turn on Coordinates in Minecraft Xbox One

Minecraft is an extremely popular game and has evolved significantly over the last decade or so. It has undergone many updates and, even more importantly, a staggering number of mods have become available.

With so many things to do, knowing the geography of your map is often crucial, especially if you're doing a building project. This is where the coordinates kick in. If you're making something big in Minecraft, you're going to need your XYZ's.

Why Would You Need the Coordinates?

The world of Minecraft is vast. Technically, it is nearly infinitely vast (in Bedrock Edition at least,) as the world is randomly generated while the player travels through it.  There is plenty of walking ground to be covered, but you can also dig beneath the ground and fly across the sky.

There are countless points of interest throughout the Minecraft world, including everything from the world spawn (where you spawn when you start for the first time,) villages, mansions, ruined portals, desert temples, and many more. One of the most useful things a player can do with coordinates in Minecraft is make notes of where these points of interest are.

Making realistic objects in Minecraft is very popular and there are many impressive examples out there. These, however, would be impossible to plan and execute without correct coordinates in the Minecraft world. Let's say that you want to build a huge pirate ship. Small-scale building is relatively easy; just count your cubes and build a house, for instance. Projects such as a huge sailing ship will require planning, and without the coordinates, you're going to have a tough time figuring it out. Luckily, they are available in Minecraft, but no by default. You'll need to turn them on in order to see the literal big picture.

How the Minecraft Coordinates Work

Like any three-dimensional space, Minecraft has three coordinates, X, Y, and Z. With these three you can accurately pinpoint the exact location of any particular cube in the Minecraft world. Here is what each of these three coordinates determines.

  1. The X coordinate determines your East/West position on the map. If the value is positive, it means that the position in question is East of the central part of the map. The negative value determines a position in the West.
  2. The Y coordinate determines your vertical position on the map. The more you move upwards, the more the positive value will increase. Alternatively, the more you go towards bedrock, the value will decrease.  Sea level will always be at Y=64.
  3. The Z coordinate determines your South/North map position. As you shift your position to the South, the positive value will increase. Go North and the numbers will turn negative.

There are two types of coordinate positions: the absolute position and the relative position.

  1. The absolute coordinate represents a specific location in Minecraft. If you see numbers 65, 239, 54, these coordinates refer to a specific location that's 65 blocks to the East, 239 blocks above the sea level, and 54 blocks South of the central point of the map.
  2. The relative coordinate is written with a "~". If you see numbers ~3, ~1, ~2, this refers to a position that's 3 blocks East, 1 block upward, and 2 blocks South of your current position.

Finding Your XYZ Coordinates

There are different methods to finding out your current coordinates while playing Minecraft, depending on whether or not you are playing the Bedrock or Java editions.

Bedrock Edition

It is extremely simple to turn find out your current coordinates while playing Bedrock Edition- there is a setting for it! Just follow these steps:

  1. Enter the Settings Menu.
  2. Select "Game."
  3. Scroll down and toggle on the selection for "Show Coordinates."

Your current coordinates will be permanently displayed in the top left potion of the screen. They will change as you move, making this incredibly useful for navigation.

Java Edition

Unfortunately, there is no simple setting for turning on coordinates in Java Edition Minecraft. However, it is still very simple to find your current coordinates. When you are in game, just press and hold the F3 key (FN + F3 on Mac) to bring up a screen that is filled with all sorts of text information about your game and world. Included in this information on the left side of the screen near the center is your current location in coordinates.

Coordinate Usage

In addition to making building large objects a much easier experience, the coordinates allow you to establish points of interest. It is easy to get lost in Minecraft and trying to find your way back to a point of interest can be a nightmare. Additionally, if you happen to respawn, you'll have an even harder time finding your way back to your point of interest.

Additionally, coordinates are used when sharing level seeds to give directions to other people where to find things. This is very convenient for YouTubers who often do Minecraft streams or people who make tutorials.

Coordinates are also used for teleporting. They can help you when you want to zip from point A to point B without the extra hassle or wasting your time. To teleport to an exact location, enter your settings and ensure that you have "Cheats: ON" selected, press the T key on your keyboard to open the chat window. For the Pocket Edition, tap on the chat button towards the top of the screen. For the Xbox One and Nintendo Switch editions, the chat window is activated by pressing Right on the D-Pad, and by pressing the right arrow on the controller, respectively. Type teleport [your username] x y z, where X, Y, and Z are to be replaced with the exact coordinates of your destination. Keep in mind that your username is case-sensitive.

Coordinates Are Essential

If you're playing basic Minecraft, the whole thrill might be in getting lost and exploring the vast world. However, if you are approaching the game from a different perspective – mods, etc. – you'll want to have coordinates at your disposal.
